Baby Falls and Head Injuries: Do You Really Need a CT Scan?
By Dr. Md Arman Ali MBBS (Medical Officer), Ex-Resident Doctor Pediatrics, AIIMS-Kalyani
In every mother’s life, the incident of a small baby falling down—whether from a sofa, a bed, a height, or simply slipping from a lap—is a terrifyingly common occurrence. In a panic, we immediately rush to the hospital to check if the fall has resulted in any dangerous hidden outcomes.
Unfortunately, getting the right, unbiased advice in that stressful moment is often far from reality. Today’s corporate hospital culture and profit-driven treatment protocols frequently push us to authorize an immediate CT scan for our little ones. Putting a few-months-old infant inside a huge, monstrous machine makes our hearts skip a beat, and it naturally forces us to question: Do we really require this CT scan to rule out a head injury? Is there any other way to find out?
The 3-Question Rule to Evaluate Head Injuries
Hello, this is Dr. Arman. Before you agree to subject your baby to unnecessary radiation and stress, you can perform a quick clinical evaluation right away. To determine if your baby truly requires a CT scan, simply ask yourself these three highly important questions:
1. Did the baby have a loss of consciousness? (Did they faint, black out, or become unresponsive, even for just a few seconds?)
2. Did the baby have a seizure or convulsion episode? (Did you notice any abnormal, involuntary jerking movements or unusual stiffness?)
3. Did the baby vomit after the head injury? (Did they throw up once or multiple times shortly after the fall?)
What Do Your Answers Mean?
If your response to all of the above questions is NO, then you do not need to immediately go for a CT scan of the brain.
A "no" to these three red flags simply shows that the head injury was superficial. In the vast majority of these cases, the bump will safely resolve at home with careful observation, gentle ice compression on the swollen area, and pediatrician-approved doses of paracetamol for any localized pain. No further invasive investigations or scary machines will be required.
Always trust your instincts as a parent, but empower yourself with the right medical knowledge so you can avoid unnecessary panic and profit-driven procedures.
